Projection of The Smile in the Stone, by sculptor Stjepo Gavric @ Zvono

Projekcija videa Osmijeh u kamenu skulptora Stijepe Gavrića

Čovjek i kamen nakratko postaju jedno.

Last night in Zvono was presented the video work by Jesenko Gavric which tracks phases of the complex formation of sculpture in stone. Blending classical music rhythm and sounds from his father’s studio, Jesenko Gavric documented the arduous struggle of he artists with the medium. This struggle involves talent, learning, skills and above all patience, because the stone is a material that provides big resistance. Anthropomorphization of stone is realized in several stages: first and foremost an artists work in studio, then the emergence of the video as a new piece of art which relies on previous and finally exposed stone sculpture in Zvono. Although this work primarily discusses the uncertain and unpredictable process of forming from monoliths, in a connotative way it persuades us to reflect on the relationship between traditional and contemporary art media. While exposed “The smile in the Stone” is simply attracting with crooked and subtle volumes, Jesenkos video work reminiscent on caution: there is no option to add weight, but only patience which could shape fullness. A sharp gap between the stone and the human figure is also attested by the difference between the seemingly raw Gavric sculptures pedestal on which rises femininity, identical to the one
