Kada govorimo o likovnom jeziku izložbe, pored različitosti individualnih stilova, važna je i upotreba vizualnih i verbalnih znakova u gradnji značenja. Međutim, ni odnos verbalnog i vizualnog nije ujednačen u svim radovima.

U duhu rada Gaila Anderona koji poručuje „If someone says you shouldn’t, ask them who should“, izložba pokazuje buntovnički karakter umjetnosti.

One of positive examples of how young people can make changes with their creativity is SOS Design festival realized in Sarajevo from 09 to 13 October. During the festival is presented exhibition Underground images. This is a group of posters which the School of Visual Arts in SVA used for self-advertising in metro, trying to attract a wider range of potential candidates. Precisely due to the direct addressing the audience and direct persuasion on creativity, this exhibition in Sarajevo is much more than that: it’s funny pointing to the art itself.

The exhibition is composed of posters from the USA, signed by a number of world-renowned artists, and is therefore stylistically various and thematically consistent. It includes works that are in the subject matter of a bit of a self-reflexive: they indicate to themselves, talk about art, about its essence, about their own purpose and meaning. Language that artists turn to us with is also different: whereas some like Milton Glaser decided to humor, Ivan Chermayeff speaks practically with philosophical, serious tone. Represented posters were made in the period from 1947th till today. Thus poster of Gilbert Stone in 1972. with the message Our time calls for multiple careers shows how art actually intuits the future and how it spontaneously suggests, therefore just mentioned issues about the purpose and importance of art in this way are simultaneously asked and responded.

When we talk about visual language in the exhibition, in addition to the diversity of individual styles, is important as well the use of visual and verbal signs in the construction of meaning. However, the relationship between verbal and visual is not uniform in all the works. In such a way, poster of Stephan Kroninger used stylistically authentic forms, in which visually absolutely dominates the verbal and in Gail Anderson’s work, words are stylistic dominant. If we agree that the art is the manipulating of meaning, not only of shapes, colors and materials , then playing with words as forming agent in this exhibition is fully justified. Using linguistic sequences, words, phrases and sentences shows how the art of designing is the way from real to abstract and vice versa , the way of intellectual effort, thanks to which the work becomes a question and answer, analysis and interpretation. Furthermore, Underground images are talking about ingenuity that an artist should possess. Innovation in posters from New York is made from the use of simple forms, which placed in a common framework, produce new meanings, so it fully corresponds with the idea that if we can not create new forms, we can create new meanings.

In the spirit of Gail Anderson that says „If someone says you should not, ask them who should”, this exhibition shows the rebellious character of art. And just knowing that these messages in the past left (Buren like) the spaces of high art and often entered in the registers of trivial, calls for change that we now more than ever need. Therefore, hoping that there will be such positive messages in the future, SOS see you next year!
